The Cool Patrol

The Cool Patrol was an idea we had right after Ignoramooses for the last slot in the What-A-Cartoon program. The idea surrounded a pair of  super-cool crime fighting heroes; Luke, a rhino, and Lester, a hippo, two ultra-hip guys who dedicated their existence on planet earth to the preservation of “all that is cool” and the eradication of “all that bites.”
Armed with their hover boards, they patrolled the city of Cosmopolis looking for evil-doers and uncool villains throughout the city.

Luke and Lester battled a variety of twisted foes who threatened to destroy and conquer the world in very uncool ways. There were creeps like Sarcastic Man… a cynic who’s words became weapons, proving words do hurt. Or Sweet Tooth, an evil granny who made candy so sweet it was hard to resist. It rotted your mind and she stole you blind! Advertisman… an apparition of raw electrical energy.. who could take over the media and the world with non-stop self promotion. These and many other sick and sinister scoundrels were tackled by the super-slick… Cool Patrol!
Right on! PEACE OUT!

We pitched the concept to Hanna Barbera in front of all the directors in the studio and they loved it. In fact everyone loved it in the room except for one person… the buyer. Sadly we ended up not selling to them.

Right after that Turner Entertainment and Time Warner merged and Harry and I decided to vacate HB. Harry went to Klasky Csupo to work on Duckman and I went to WB to work on Pinky and the Brain.

Meanwhile one of the executives from HB also left the studio and landed at Universal Studios where she optioned Cool Patrol and we set about making a series of on line comics for it. Unfortunately this was in 1998 and the online community was not so widespread. As a result the shorts we made were not very detailed and had little or no animation. In the end, they were barely more than “illustrated radio”. Still, it was an idea, it was ours, and someone was paying us to do it so we moved forward.

We made two short episodes and the division of Universal that was making the shorts went belly up. today Cool patrol is still owned by Universal although the company has changed hands so many times they probably don’t even know it.

A bit of the art from Cool Patrol!
